Streamlining BMD's processes to ensure the successful implementation of TechnologyOne

Project Summary

BMD are on a transformation journey to consolidate their technology architecture and enterprise solutions to achieve a more scalable, secure, and efficient environment for their many companies. As part of an uplift of their ERP solutions to the TechnologyOne platform, BMD identified the need to address a number of inefficiencies due to multiple disparate systems and a lack of standardisation across its companies, leading to increased costs, manual processes, and data handling challenges.

In addition to our role as BMD’s TechnologyOne Delivery Partner, Avec has partnered with BMD to assist in the facilitation of 13 workshops, mapping out 27 essential processes to standardise operations and provide a clear roadmap for integrating TechnologyOne across the organisation’s systems, people, and processes. This pre-implementation strategy ensured BMD are well-prepared for a structured and efficient digital transformation across all levels of the organisation.

The challenge

BMD faced significant challenges due to multiple disparate systems requiring extensive manual intervention to function together. Their processes relied on several disconnected platforms, resulting in complex integrations through a data lake, manual workflows, and ongoing data reconciliation. While this approach allowed the business to operate, it led to increased software management costs, duplicated efforts, and inefficiencies in data handling.

A key factor contributing to these challenges is BMD’s ever-evolving structure. As one of Australia’s fastest growing construction organisations, BMD continues develop capability across multiple companies, including well-known brands such as BMD Constructions, Urbex, Jmac, Empower, and BMD Urban. Due to rapid growth, each company operates with its own systems and processes, leading to challenges in how and why certain tasks were performed. This lack of standardisation has created disconnects across the business, making collaboration and efficiency more difficult to achieve.

To address these issues, BMD sought to invest in the TechnologyOne solution as part of a broader strategy to drive digital innovation and continuous improvement. Their goal was to provide structured guidance and support to the business while ensuring a more streamlined and integrated approach to operations. Ultimately, this investment aimed to enhance efficiency, empower employees, and deliver a greater return on investment for BMD’s shareholders.

The solution

The Avec team partnered with BMD to support their digital transformation by providing process mapping expertise. To assist BMD in streamlining their operations, Avec assisted in the facilitation of 13 workshops, bringing together managers from each of BMD’s companies to collaboratively design their future-state processes. These sessions provided valuable insights into how BMD’s operations could be standardised across the organisation, ensuring greater efficiency, consistency, and alignment with industry best practices. By mapping out these processes, Avec helped BMD establish a clear roadmap for integrating TechnologyOne and enhancing their digital capabilities.

The results

Each workshop focused on key operational areas critical to BMD’s future state. These sessions played a vital role in mapping out 27 essential processes, helping to establish a clear and standardised approach across the business. The key areas of focus included:

  • Progress and payment claims for both head contractors and subcontractors
  • Subcontractor management through TechnologyOne’s portal
  • Project and budget variations
  • Project and executive reporting
  • Forecasting and valuations
  • Risk and opportunity management
  • Procurement processes
  • Budget management

In addition to these core areas, targeted procurement workshops provided valuable insights, paving the way for further process improvements and defining detailed requirements for solution implementation. Furthermore, specialised Asset Management Workshops were conducted to design the future state and requirements for fleet and lease management.

These workshops formed a crucial part of BMD’s pre-implementation strategy, ensuring they are well-prepared for the integration of TechnologyOne. By mapping out these processes in advance, BMD can confidently move forward with a structured and efficient digital transformation.
